What's a good clay for slab-building?

What is the most suitable type of clay for creating pottery using the slab building technique.
When considering the most suitable type of clay for creating pottery using the slab building technique, several factors come into play. One crucial aspect to consider is the clay's plasticity and workability. A clay body with good plasticity will be easier to roll out into slabs and manipulate into various shapes without cracking or becoming too brittle.
In addition to plasticity, the clay's firing temperature is another essential factor to take into account. Different types of clay have varying firing temperatures, ranging from low-fire to high-fire clays. It is important to choose a clay body that can withstand the desired firing temperature for the specific pottery project you have in mind.
Furthermore, the colour and texture of the clay can also influence the final outcome of the pottery piece. Some clays have a natural colour that can enhance the overall aesthetic of the finished piece, while others may require glazing to achieve the desired look.
Lastly, considering the intended use of the pottery can also help determine the most suitable type of clay. For functional pieces like dinnerware or mugs, a clay body such as a stoneware that is durable and food-safe is essential. On the other hand, for decorative pieces, you may have more flexibility in choosing a clay based on its aesthetic qualities maybe an earthenware clay.
I've been using this grogged stoneware from Bath Potters. It's a general purpose clay good for throwing and modelling it can also be fired to earthenware and stoneware temperatures.
The second clay I've been using with is also good for slab building, modelling and throwing is the White Earthenware smooth Clay CWE again from bath potters. I've not had any issues with this clay so far.
Having purchased Buff Stoneware Clay SSB8, a versatile clay specifically suitable for hand modelling, I will assess its performance for slab building in my upcoming blog post. With its attractive price point, I am optimistic about its quality.
But my ultimate favourite clay for slab building so far is actually a throwing clay form Hot-Clay is called Sibelco Smooth White Throwing Clay.
It's great to try sample packs of clay to work out which clay is a best fit for you and your own projects. A lot of suppliers sells sample bags at 1kg which is perfect for fun trials and experiments. Ultimately its all down to personal preference and enjoying the adventures of discovery.
Happy potting.
